Welcome to the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga! Our department offers degree programs in Biology (B.S.) and Environmental Science (B.S. and M.S.). Our programs are characterized by excellent teaching, diverse research opportunities, and an intense commitment to the education and lives of our students. With over 600 majors and more than 90 different course offerings, our department provides a diverse and vibrant learning environment.

Whether your interests lie in the medical professions, laboratory or field research, conservation, stream ecology, toxicology, environmental management, or any of a number of other areas, our department can likely exceed your expectations.
Our degree programs will prepare you for success in the workplace and advanced study. Our alumni work in the private, government, academic, and non-profit sectors, and include physicians, nurses, wildlife biologists, professors, middle and high school science teachers, land managers, environmental lawyers, environmental consultants, geographic information specialists, and technicians, to name a few.

Mae Kile, a graduate student in Dr. Jennifer Boyd's lab, was named co-recipient of this year’s Sigma Xi Outstanding Research Award at UTC!
Several department faculty, along with undergraduate and graduate students, recently attended the 72nd Annual Meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists in Huntsville, Alabama.
Emily Blyveis, a graduate student in Dr. Joey Shaw’s lab, received two student research awards from the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society. George Campbell, an undergraduate student in Dr. Margaret Kovach’s lab, received the ASB poster award. Congratulations!
