'Batman Incorporated' #5 : Three Batmen and One Batwoman Team-Up [Preview]

As it turns out, we were hasty in our description of last month's Batman Incorporated #4 as the first proper meeting between Bruce Wayne's Batman and Kate Kane's Batwoman. While the issue did indeed feature both the modern Batwoman and her Golden Age counterpart, Kate Kane and Bruce Wayne don't officially shake hands until this week's Batman Incorporated #5. Written by Grant Morrison with art by Yanick Paquette & Michel Lacombe, the new issue also guest stars Gaucho, the Batman of Argentina, and The Hood, a Batman of the United Kingdom.

Designer Makes Lego-Style Helmet That Reads Comics to Kids

Inspired by the comics in old LEGO magazines, UK-based designer Jonathan Robson has created an interactive comics-reading platform in the beloved LEGO idiom. Called "Audio Comics," Robson's concept -- which is not official -- involves downloading a fully produced audiobook that's then transferred onto a USB drive which inserts into a helmet based on that worn by the classic LEGO figures. Children wear the helmet, which has built-in speakers with which to listen to the audio file while they read the corresponding comic book, which is received by mail.

The First Image from 'The Avengers' Movie Set Seats Four Comfortably

Director and screenwriter Joss Whedon and crew officially began production on the Albuquerque, New Mexico set of The Avengers today and there's a slick set photo teaser to prove it. Chilling in front of a seeming S.H.I.E.L.D. corridor are chairs for four of Earth's Mightiest Heroes including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America and new Hulk Mark Ruffalo. Fans can count on the big four being joined by Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury -- fitting eight chairs into this shot seems like a bit much to ask of busy crew working to meet a May 4, 2012 deadline, though.

Sad Baby Monsters: Cthulhu and the Rancor Just Need a Hug

A few weeks ago, we posted a set of redesigns by students at the Savannah College of Art and Design inspired by Marvel's American Panther, including one by SCAD's own Jackie Lewis. I had the chance to meet Jackie this past weekend at Fluke 2011 in Athens, GA, and it turns out that turning the Red Skull into an icon of American patriotism isn't the only incredible transformation she's pulled off -- she's also done a set of Sad Baby Monsters that show a softer side of horrors, from mythological beasts like the Hydra and the Chimera, all the way down to pop culture icons like Cthulhu and The Rancor from Star Wars!

It's not exactly clear what made these monsters so sad -- a stubbed toe? A lost ball? Not enough people to devour and sate their endless, all-consuming hunger for death? -- but the end result is that they're adorable. Check out the entire set after the jump!

Read 'Afrodisiac' Online: Blaxploitation Flicks x Trashy '70s Marvel Comics

If there are two things we love, it's gotta be blaxploitation movies and trashy '70s Marvel comics. Blaxploitation films managed to capture the zeitgeist and turn a thirst for social justice (and hatred for injustice) into compelling entertainment. '70s Marvel books were full of scary monsters, talking ducks, demonic motorcycle riders, and daughters of Satan. The heyday of both genres are long gone now, but luckily, Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca share our tastes and created Afrodisiac, an incredible graphic novel that blends the two.

If you somehow managed to miss it, Adhouse has been kind enough to provide us with an online copy of entire book -- which was nominated for an 2011 Eisner Award for Best Humor Publication -- and you can read it for free right here.

The 'Y: The Last Man' Collection is Now Complete [Cover Gallery]

On sale this week is the fifth and final hardcover volume collecting Y: The Last Man, possibly the most beloved creator-owned comic book series released in this young century. A regular on "Best Of" lists throughout its six-year run, the Vertigo series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra & Jose Marzan, Jr. is the story of a mysterious plague that instantly and simultaneously wipes out every male mammal on Earth save for one 20-something amateur escape artist and his pet monkey. Spanning years, Y's story confronts with equal measures of drama and comedy themes of relationships and gender politics against a startlingly realistic post-apocalyptic landscape.

Y: The Last Man was collected in ten modestly priced and sized paperback editions, but the oversized hardcovers offer a lovelier product at a better value, and it is volume 1 of this series that ComicsAlliance recommends new comics readers pick up. In honor of this presumably final release of Y: The Last Man material, we've put together a gallery of the series' many beautiful covers by such artists as J.G. Jones, Aron Wiesenfeld and Massimo Carnevale, the latter of whom created the bulk of Y's covers and all of those for the hardcover editions.

Don't Ask! Just Buy It! - April 27, 2011: Running with the Shadows of the Night

Reading Comics author Douglas Wolk runs down the hottest comics and graphic novels coming out this week.

                  KEY:
                  * Revisionist history
                  ^ Ampersands and virgules
% Half a year from Halloween

                  ^ ACTION COMICS #900
Hey, Superman's back! And not a moment too soon. 96 pages, written by Paul Cornell, Richard Donner, David Goyer and David Lindelof, wrapping up Cornell's Lex Luthor serial and shifting into some kind of Doomsday-related storyline; it's drawn by various folks including Pete Woods. In additional DC anniversary news, this week also sees Justice Society of America #50, notable for being yet another Howard Chaykin sighting. My rudimentary calculations suggest that May 18 may be the first Wednesday in a while without a Chaykin comic shipping, but for all I know he'll be in that week's Bart Simpson Comics or Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose or something.

Why Everyone Should (Legally) Download DC's 'Chase' Drawn by J.H. Williams III

One of the great things about digital comics is how much potential there is to get great stories that just didn't hit the first time around into the hands of new readers. Without the print and distribution costs seen in traditional channels, publishers are able to make a few of the more obscure parts of their back catalogs available to readers at much less risk than they would with a printed comic -- and that's exactly what DC's doing by offering up Chase through Comixology.

Originally released in 1998, Chase focuses on a private investigator turned government agent whose job was to keep tabs on the super-heroes of the DC Universe. Written by Dan Curtis Johnson with art by J.H. Williams III, it was sharp, creative and well done, but was also short-lived and the entire series was never collected. Now, it's getting a second chance to find an audience, and if you haven't read it, you should.

Mud Goes Crazy With Spider-Man, Pac-Man and Mega Man [Art]

Spider-Man and Wolverine have been redesigned to look like screaming Rugrats characters in the looney big-headed artwork of Mud. As an illustrator, he slams the energy of a disgruntled infant and wobbly bodies together to pay tribute to well-known comics heroes, as well as a few video game icons like Mega Man and Pac-Man.

In a recent interview with MTV, Evans confirmed that his character will don a new costume in The Avengers and, more surprisingly, that Captain America will OH WAIT SPOILERS so you'll have to check after the jump for a big plot reveal from The First Avenger.

Stussy to Unveil its Marvel Tees and Trading Cards this Week [Video]

In a move seemingly timed to appeal to the Wednesday comic store crowd, the Stussy x Marvel collaboration is set to launch on April 27. What's it all about? $36 dollar t-shirts packed with collector-centric trading cards sporting a mix of classic and indie art, from the look of it. The collection debuts Tuesday night at a Meltdown Comics party in Hollywood, California and is followed by a special Stussy/Mondo/Marvel movie event at the Cinefamily theater.
