Early Detection

Early Detection provides initial evidence of an invasive species. Early detection can be achieved by "active detection networks" comprised of individuals that have a specific job responsibility to find invasive species. They typically focus on species of concern, high-risk pathways, and locations. Veterinarians must report the occurrence of certain invasive animal pathogens such as Foot and Mouth Disease. The identification of species is essential to early detection efforts. Scientific collections are part of the critical infrastructure that allow for the timely authoritative identification of specimens.
