Host: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center
Scope: The Forest Threat Summary Viewer provides images, distribution maps, web links, extension and state contact information, and brief and detailed descriptions about specific forest threats in the eastern United States. Searchable by forest threat or by State.

Database: Global Invasive Species Database / 100 of the World's Worst Invasive Alien Species
Host: Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG); Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP)
Scope: The Global Invasive Species Database aims to increase awareness about invasive alien species and to facilitate effective prevention and management activities. The database focuses on invasive alien species that threaten native biodiversity and covers all taxonomic groups from micro-organisms to animals and plants in all ecosystems. Species information is either supplied by or reviewed by expert contributors from around the world.

Database: Hawaiian Ecosystems at Risk (HEAR)
Host:  U.S. Geological Survey; University of Hawai'i
Scope:  This Web site provides technology, methods, and information to decision-makers, resource managers, and the general public to aid in the fight against harmful alien species in Hawaii.  Its Harmful Non-Indigenous Species Database (HNIS) offers data on plant, vertebrate, and invertebrate invaders.

Database: Invasive and Exotic Species of North America - Invasive.org
Host: A joint project between The University of Georgia - Bugwood Network and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service
Scope: Over 8,300 images, including over 1,000 new images of invasive species (including many weeds) and their biological control agents, taken by over 250 photographers are available. Most images were digitized from high-resolution 35mm slides. Multiple levels of jpeg format images are downloadable and may be copied and used for any non-profit, educational purpose with appropriate credit and copyright notice. Although most images are North American in nature, the system also contains images of organisms that are "Non-U.S. Natives", or are considered to be " U.S. Invasives".

Host: Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)
Scope: NISbase is a new distributed database portal developed by SERC to provide simultaneous search access to multiple invasive species databases.

Scope: The Environmental Law Institute has published (Aug 2002) an online database of invasive species management laws in the 50 states. The searchable state database, which summarizes most if not all laws affecting invasive species management in each state.

Scope:  This database contains fields such as pest type, order, family, scientific name, author, common name, source, illustration, data sheet, citation, update, comment, host distribution, and regulated site.

Database: Crop Profiles Database
Host:  U.S. Department of Agriculture
Scope: This database profiles various crop species grown in the U.S., and includes data about the arthropod and plant pests that affect them,  including invasive species.  Users can search by crop type, region, and/or key terms.  Each crop profiled includes listings of pest species and their potential damage, monitoring techniques, pest life history, and possible controls.

Database: Ecological Database of the World's Insect Pathogens

Scope: The Ecological Database of the World's Insect Pathogens (EDWIP) offers information on fungi, viruses, protozoa, mollicutes, nematodes, and bacteria that are infectious in insects, mites, and related arthropods. Data in EDWIP include associations (or lack thereof) between pathogenic organisms and insect, mite, and other arthropod hosts. EDWIP also includes information on where associations have been observed, stages and tissues of hosts infected, and habitats and host ranges of the arthropod hosts.

Scope: This database identifies exotic insects, mites, and pathogenic organisms with potential to cause significant damage to North American forest resources, provides background information on identified pests, and serves as a resource for North American regulatory and forest forest protection agencies in North America.

Host:  U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service; Purdue University, Entomology Department, Center for Environmental and Regulatory Information Systems
Scope:  Search access to the full NAPIS database is limited to employees of the USDA; however, important information concerning plant pests, including invasives, is available from this public access site.  The Pest Information section profiles hundreds of pest species, and includes fact sheets; survey and distribution maps; regulations; related links; and photos.  The State Reports section highlights specific pest issues for each state.

Scope: collection of data about forest insects and diseases along with related data for the Southern United States. The states included are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Scope: AGRICOLA is a bibliographic database of citations to the agricultural literature. The records describe publications and resources encompassing all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences.

Database: Biota of North America Program (BONAP)
Host:  North Carolina Botanical Garden; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
Scope: The program's goal is to develop a unified digital system for assessing the North American biota through the maintenance of the taxonomic, nomenclatural, and biogeographic data for all members of the biota. The BONAP database (hosted by USDA, APHIS) now includes data for all vascular plants and vertebrate species (native, naturalized, and adventive) of the United States and Canada. In Jan 2010, BONAP released it's North American Plant Atlas; county-level atlas for continguous 48 states.

Database: Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS)
Host: ITIS is the result of a partnership of federal agencies formed to satisfy their mutual needs for scientifically credible taxonomic information.
Scope: ITIS is an authoritative taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world.

Database: NatureServe Explorer - An Online Encyclopedia of Life
Host:  NatureServe
Scope: NatureServe Explorer is a source for authoritative conservation information on more than 50,000 plants, animals, and ecological communities of the United States and Canada. NatureServe Explorer provides in-depth information on rare and endangered species, but includes common plants and animals too. NatureServe Explorer is a product of NatureServe in collaboration with the Natural Heritage Network.

Database: Plant Diagnostic Information System (PDIS)
Host:  Kansas State University Research and Extension
Scope: The Plant Diagnostics Information System has been developed to facilitate plant diagnostic lab activities for a consortium of land grant institutions, state departments of agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These labs provide services for plant disease diagnosis, plant identification, and insect identification. PDIS is a system of web and database applications designed to facilitate recordkeeping and communication needs of lab personnel and their customers.

Scope: Species 2000 has the objective of enumerating all known species of plants, animals, fungi and microbes on Earth as the baseline dataset for studies of global biodiversity. It will also provide a simple access point enabling users to link from here to other data systems for all groups of organisms, using direct species-links.

Scope: ETI's World Biodiversity Database is a continuously growing taxonomic database and information system that aims at documenting all presently known species (about 1.7 million) and to make this important biological information worldwide accessible.

Scope: Zipcode Zoo's location-based platform enables visitors to view information on invasive species, species that are threatened and all species that live in a specific geographic area or zip code. ZipCode Zoo's online field guide for professional and amateur naturalists has grown to 2.7 million species pages.
