Lieberman Introduces Legislation to Improve Waterways, Protect Fish Habitats

(WASHINGTON, DC) –Today, Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) announced the introduction of the National Fish Habitat Conservation Act. This legislation, which would significantly advance ongoing efforts to restore and protect fish habitats, improves the health of America’s waterways and ensures that the United States has robust fish populations well into the future. The legislation would establish the most comprehensive effort ever attempted to treat the causes of fish habitat decline.

2011 NFHAP Press Tracker

2011 "Waters to Watch" List Announced

(Washington, DC) – The National Fish Habitat Action Plan (www.fishhabitat.org) has unveiled the 2011 10 “Waters to Watch” list, a collection of rivers, streams, lakes and estuaries that will benefit from strategic conservation efforts to protect, restore or enhance their current condition over the next year.  

These waters represent a snapshot of this year’s voluntary habitat conservation efforts in progress.  These and other locally driven conservation projects are prioritized and implemented by regional Fish Habitat Partnerships that have formalized under the National Fish Habitat Action Plan.  The objective of the Action Plan is to conserve priority freshwater, estuarine and marine habitats essential to the many fish and wildlife species that depend on them.

July National Fish Habitat Board Meeting Announcement

The July 2011 NFHAP Board meeting will take place in Madison, Wisconsin July 26 and 27.  The Board Meeting will be held at the Madison Concourse Hotel beginning at 9:00 AM Tuesday July 26th and ending at 4:00 PM on July 27th.

NFHAP Priority Objectives Survey

The National Fish Habitat Action Plan (the Action Plan), developed in 2006, brings federal, state, tribal, non-profit and local partners together in a national partnership to improve fish habitats across the United States in a collaborative, science-based, and non-regulatory manner.  The national partnership has also recognized seventeen regionally-based Fish Habitat Partnerships (FHPs) that are implementing fish habitat conservation and protection projects in communities around the country.

Status of Fish Habitats Report Gives “Fish Eye View” of National Waters

The National Fish Habitat Board (www.fishhabitat.org) today released a first-of-its-kind status of fish habitats in the United States report as envisioned in the National Fish Habitat Action Plan, an effort to protect, restore and enhance our nation’s aquatic habitats.  The report titled THROUGH A FISH’S EYE: The Status of Fish Habitats In The United States 2010 summarizes the results of an unprecedented, nationwide assessment of the human effects on fish habitat in the rivers and estuaries of the United States.
