Native To: Possibly Southern Asia

Date of U.S. Introduction: First detected in Texas cotton in 1917. The source was traced to cottonseed shipped from Mexico to Texas oil millsin 1916 (Spears 1968, USDA 1977).

Means of Introduction: Arrived from northern Mexico naturally or through infested shipments

Impact: Adults lay eggs on cotton bolls; once hatched, the larvae eat the seeds and damage the fibers of the cotton

Current U.S. Distribution: Southwestern U.S.
