National Interagency Team Mobilizing To Tackle White-Nose Syndrome of Bats (2011; PDF | 2 MB)
USDA. FS. Northern Research Station.
Research Review, Winter 2011, No. 12.
Northern Research Station scientists are helping unravel the mysteries of white-nose syndrome (WNS), a fungal disease devastating bat populations in eastern North America.

White-Nose Syndrome Devasting Bat Colonies (Winter 2011)
Animal Welfare Institute. AWI Quarterly.
White-Nose Syndrome has killed at least one million bats - and probably far more than that - as it has raced across the eastern United States since appearing in a single New York cave in the winter of 2006.

Comments Sought on Plan to Combat Deadly White-Nose Syndrome in Bats (PDF | 56.2 KB) (Oct 27, 2010)
DOI. Fish and Wildlife Service.
White-nose syndrome (WNS) has killed more than a million bats in the Northeast and has spread to 11 or more states in less than four years since its discovery near Albany, New York. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in collaboration with other federal agencies, including USDA, state agencies and tribal governments, is proposing a coordinated national management plan to address this critical environmental issue. The proposed plan is available for review and comment through Dec 26, 2010. The plan and additional information are available on the FWS White-Nose Syndrome site.

Native To: Unknown; the fungus has been discovered on bats in Europe, but it is unknown whether it is endemic to this area or a recent introduction

Date of U.S. Introduction: First discovered in a cave near Albany, New York in Feb 2006. New York Department of Environmental Conservation biologists documented white-nose syndrome in Jan 2007.

Means of Introduction: Unknown

Impact: Disease of bats with mortality rates of 60 to 90 percent

Current U.S. Distribution: Eastern U.S.
