Because awareness is an important first
step in preventing the introduction and
spread of invasive species, Governor Terry
Branstad has proclaimed May Invasive Species
Awareness Month. Invasive species threaten
Iowa's lands and waters by competing with
and destroying native plants and animals
and by disrupting complex natural ecosystems.

A researcher and horticulturist
at Iowa State University is collecting and
storing seeds for several species of trees,
including ash, for the USDA's National Plant
Germplasm System. The seed stocks can serve
as a national source for reintroducing ash
trees once the devastation from the Emerald
Ash Borer can be controlled.
Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers

The DNR is reminding boaters and anglers to stop and check for unwanted hitchhikers to help protect Iowa's waters.
It
is illegal to possess, introduce, purchase,
sell or transport aquatic invasive species.
