County finds first North American instance
of invasive Chinese pond mussel (Sep 26, 2010)

New Jersey state biologists confirmed Chinese
pond mussels were found in Hunterdon County,
after a recent DNA test. This is the first
known intrusion of the freshwater pond mussel
in North America.

This report provides 2009 project results
and 2010 planned activities for the New
Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team (NJISST),
which represents New Jersey's first cooperative
effort to perform regional early detection & rapid
response aimed at preventing future infestations.

Asked to Report Invasive Mitten Crabs (Jul

The Division of Fish and Wildlife has
contacted, and will be cooperating with,
the Smithsonian
Environmental Research Center (SERC) in
Edgewater, Maryland, which is spearheading
the investigation of mitten
crabs along the eastern U.S.
The SERC is gathering as much information
as possible on any mitten crabs that have
been caught this year or in recent years
to help determine their current distribution.
The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife
is seeking the public's assistance
in providing information on any mitten
crabs they encounter.
Invasive
Flathead Catfish Found in New Jersey (Jun 18, 2009)
New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife.
The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife
has verified a 5.5 pound, 20-inch Flathead
Catfish was caught in the Delaware
River at the Fireman's Hole, Lambertville,
on Jun 10, 2009. In the southeastern United
States, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
has listed it as its highest priority among
invasive animal species.
Anglers that catch what they think is
a Flathead catfish are asked not to release
it back into the water, and to notify the
Division's Bureau of Freshwater Fisheries.
