VHS
fish disease caused gizzard shad fish kill
in Milwaukee Harbor ship canals (Apr
1, 2011)
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
A massive fish kill of thousands of gizzard
shad last month in the Milwaukee harbor has
been linked to a deadly fish virus, viral
hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS),
that was first discovered in Lake Michigan
in 2007. VHS is harmless to humans, but can
affect several dozen fish species, including
popular sport and commercial fish such as perch,
trout and whitefish.
No
Traces of Asian Carp Found in Milwaukee
Waterways (Mar 22, 2011)
Wisconsin Department
of Natural Resources.
No traces of Asian
carp DNA have been found in water samples
collected from major Milwaukee waterways,
according to the University of Notre Dame
researchers who did the sampling. The DNR
provided boats and boat operators to help
collect the water samples from the Milwaukee,
Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic rivers and
nearby creeks and ponds in Nov 2010. Last
Jan, the Notre Dame researchers had
identified for the first time in Lake Michigan
genetic material from Asian carp. Those
earlier findings raised concerns that the
carp had found its way beyond the barrier
system built to prevent the fish from entering
the Great Lakes.
