Parks Offer Hands-On Workdays on Invasive

In
recognition of National
Invasive Species Awareness Week, the Environmental
Stewardship Program of DNREC's Division of
Parks and Recreation is hosting three invasive
plant "workdays" at state parks
on Jan 9. The workdays will be held at White
Clay Creek State Park, Cape Henlopen State
Park and Killens Pond State Park.

Researchers at the
University of Delaware have discovered that
the poison secreted by phragmites becomes
even more toxic in the presence of the sun's
ultraviolet rays. Their study is believed
to be the first to report the effects of UV-B
radiation on plant allelopathy, the production
of toxins by a plant to ward off encroachment
by neighboring plants.
