Citizen Scientist Program's Success Highlighted (Jun 1, 2011)

A program that harnesses volunteers throughout Texas to collect conservation data has been highlighted as a model citizen scientist program in the June issue of the journal Bioscience. More than 1,100 Texans have been trained by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center's Invaders of Texas Citizen Scientists Program to identify and report non-native invasive plants throughout the state. These citizen scientists have logged more than 12,000 observations of invasive plants on a publicly accessible online database that governmental agencies and resource managers can use to monitor the plants that compete with native plants.

Witchweed is an invasive plant that has crippled key segments of the agricultural industry in countries around the globe. But an aggressive eradication program has reduced infested U.S. acres by more than 99 percent.

Stinging Ants Appear Eradicated on Maui (Oct 21, 2010)

Rapid response and the development of innovative pest control methods coordinated by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture has resulted in eradication of an infestation of a highly invasive pest, called Little Fire Ants (LFA), on Maui. LFA, which delivers painful stings, were reported by a Maui farmer in Oct 2009 and were found to infest about a half acre of the farm in Waihee.

The Emerald Ash Borer University uses free Webinars to deliver Emerald Ash Borer information easily and inexpensively with a minimum of travel and expense to participants. More than 400 people registered for the first four Webinars. Participants have come from many States in the U.S. as well as Canada. Classes will be offered throughout 2010. Registration and previous webinars are available on the university Web site.
