Green Orphanage

Green Orphans Adoption Centre now open!

Did you miss the plantsale or are you still looking for few species to add to your garden?  It’s not too late!
NANPS still has a number of very special plants looking to put down roots.  Can you provide a good home for one our green orphans?

We've also opened a second adoption centre in conjunction with our friends at the Waterloo-Wellington Native Plant Society in Guelph, Ontario.  If you've looked at our list before, please take another peak to see our new additions!

In Support of Native Plant Gardens

Native plant gardening is a wonderful way to connect with nature and to improve your piece of the planet, yet such gardens are not always appreciated by neighbours more interested in tending lawn and other Eurasian species.   Ecological gardens are, however, on the rise and a new appreciation of their multi-dimensional aesthetic qualities is growing.  In addition to being popular, practical and ecologically relevant, there are also legal protections for these important spaces.  Please read on to join our petition and to find out what more you can do to support native plant gardening

The plight of our bees, both native and the non-native honey bee, has been in the news a lot lately. Loss of habitat, food sources, pests and diseases and pesticides are all to blame. Even our love for mulch can have a negative impact on ground burrowing native bees. They need bare soil to dig their home in! How can you help? Native bees love native plants, it’s as simple as that!

Announcements

The submission deadline for NANPS garden/restoration award is July 31st.   Don't be shy!  We want to learn about gardens and restoration projects around North America.

NANPS Fall Tour  - Hope Grows in Markham: Nature in the 905 - will be on Saturday September 24th 2011, when we tour some conservation sites in the suburbs to see how, with good planning and lots of help, nature can thrive in the city. Save the date! Check here for more details.

Plant of the Month: Silver Bell

Silver Bell  Halesia  tetraptera, H. Carolina, H. monticola

What better plant to usher in the Christmas season?

H. tetraptera aren’t always associated with white Christmas’s however.  These small trees are actually native to mixed forests, often along streams, in the central and southeastern states, extending as far north as West Virginia, south to northern Florida and west to Oklahoma.  Silver bells can live up to 100 years.
