Introduction

This webpage displays results of the National Wildlife Refuge System Invasive Species Survey. In 2002-2003 the National Wildlife Refuge System Invasive Species Program conducted an electronic survey of all federally designated USFWS National Wildlife Refuges to assess the current status and management of invasive non-native plant species, non-indigenous animals and diseases of plants and animals.

This webpage is designed to be an invasive species management tool. All of the results of the survey are available and reported at scales useful at local, regional, and national scales. Internet distribution of the survey results provides managers with a resource for species-specific control techniques, eases coordination among refuges facing common issues, and may provide a mechanism for sharing limited resources like control teams and equipment. One of the most important benefits is the development of predictive invasive species lists based on other national-scale datasets. Lists of regionally occurring non-native plants and non-indigenous bird and aquatic animal species (county or drainage) are available on this website for each national wildlife refuge. This synthesis allows for an efficient approach to inventory, monitoring, and control, and provides a platform for cooperation with partners on adjacent landscapes.

Data Organization and Description

A significant amount of information was collected about invasive species at each refuge. Appropriate information was synthesized at national, regional, and state scales while refuge information is displayed as entered in the survey. The early detection or regional species lists are linked to each refuge in the refuge section. The data can be accessed by moving the cursor (is that the right word for the arrow?) over the National, Regional, State, or Refuge buttons above and then selecting a category of data or a specific refuge.
