Invasive Species

The term "invasive species" is used to refer to a plant or animal species that spreads aggressively and displaces more desireable species.  The term is related to other terms including "weed", "exotic", "alien" and others. The most important characteristic of invasive species is that they not only occur where they are not wanted, but that they do so in numbers large enough to displace desired species and usually they dominate a site to the extent that diversity is greatly reduced.  The biggest concern of this web site is to provide information on invasive species that are threatening the natural communities and native species of Wisconsin.

It is our goal to eventually provide on this site a thorough data source regarding invasive species in Wisconsin.  In the interest of providing an immediate source of information on this topic we will begin with a list of plant species known to be invasive in Wisconsin.  As material becomes available we will add photos of these species, references to literature regarding its management, and links to web sites dealing with invasive species.  Therefore if you don't find everything you need here, check back later for new information. A list of invasive animals will be added as soon as possible.

If you have additional information regarding invasive species that you think would be beneficial on this site, please contact Gary Fewless at fewlessg@uwgb.edu.
