Inspections reveal new threat to Lake Tahoe

Las Vegas NV—Nevada Senator Harry Reid today issued the following statement on the discovery of a new invasive species poised to enter Lake Tahoe:

“The discovery of the New Zealand mud snail at a boat inspection station in Meyers demonstrates that while inspections are preventing invasive species from entering Lake Tahoe, more must be done to address new threats and help restore the health of the Crown Jewel of the Sierras,” said Reid.

“The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act of 2010 represents a partnership between the federal government, Nevada, and California that will ensure funding for habitat management programs including aquatic invasive species prevention, storm water management, watershed restoration, Lahontan Cutthroat trout reintroduction, and hazardous fuels reduction.  My bill will also support in-depth study of the ecological and biological trends in the Tahoe Basin to direct future management of this unparalleled resource.  I am committed to passing this legislation quickly so funding for invasive species prevention and habitat restoration can be deployed as soon as possible.”
