State of the Birds
Patuxent scientists and databases have played a critical role in development of the State of the Birds reports. These reports provide comprehensive summaries of the population status of North American birds.
USGS Bird Banding Laboratory
The Bird Banding Laboratory coordinates the banding and marking of birds across the United States and its territories. Its databases house approximately 64.5 million banding records and 4.5 million recoveries of banded birds, providing a wealth of information on the migratory movements of birds across the continent.
Whooping Cranes
A captive propagation program for Whooping cranes was started at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in 1966. Patuxent has led the way in research on crane husbandry techniques, breeding biology, training chicks for reintroduction, and assessment of population viability.
Bird Phenology Program
The North American Bird Phenology Program, part of the USA-National Phenology Network, was a network of volunteer observers who recorded information on first arrival dates, maximum abundance, and departure dates of migratory birds across North America dating from 1880 to 1970.
SECURE
SECURE: is a global network, spanning 26 countries on 6 continents, of Surface Elevation Table-Marker Horizon (SET-MH) stations that provide high-resolution accretion, elevation, and subsidence data across local and regional landscapes.
Patuxent Facilities Modernization Program
Critical facilities deficiencies at Patuxent that have developed over decades will be rectified by the completion of the ongoing Patuxent Facilities Modernization Program.
Seaduck Research
Research on waterfowl has always been a priority at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. The Atlantic Seaduck Project continues research on potential impacts of offshore windpower on seabird habitat utilization, prey resource shifts due to climate change and land use change, and ecological services of oyster restoration efforts in the Chesapeake Bay.
Structured Decision Making
Patuxent Wildlife Research Center is a recognized world-leader in the application of Structured Decision Making (SDM) to problems in natural resource management and has applied the approach to a wide variety of North American conservation questions: horseshoe crab and shorebirds in Delaware Bay, white-nose syndrome in bats, wolf recovery, needs of the National Refuge System for bird monitoring, Steller's eider reintroduction, to mention only a few.
