A voter registration application may be submitted to your local board of elections or the State Board of Elections at any time. However, mailed applications must be postmarked by October 12, 2012 and received by October 17, 2012 to vote in the General Election. If you submit a voter registration application during the period that registration is closed, your application will be held at the local board of elections and processed when registration reopens.

You may register at your local board of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote in the General Election, your application must be received no later than October 12, 2012, unless you have been honorably discharged from the military or have become a naturalized citizen since October 12, 2012. In those cases, you may register in person at the board of elections up until October 26, 2012.

To register to vote in the State of New York, an individual must meet the following qualifications:

• Be a United States citizen;
• Be 18 years old by December 31 of the year in which you file this form (note: you must be 18 years old by the date of the general, primary or other election in which you want to vote);
• Live at your present address at least 30 days before an election;
• Not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction and;
• Not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court;
• Not claim the right to vote elsewhere.
