On Tuesday, President Obama and I took another step towards eliminating childhood hunger and improving the nutrition, health, and wellbeing of all Americans - particularly our children. At a luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington D.C., I detailed this Administration's vision for a healthy America and the goals we will achieve to get there. Good nutrition is not only vital to the long-term health of children; it is an integral part of improving academic performance and ensuring future generations are competitive in a global economy.

Cross-posted from the White House blog. Food desert? What's a food desert? As part of Let's Move! , the campaign to end childhood obesity, First Lady Michelle Obama is taking on food deserts. These are nutritional wastelands that exist across America in both urban and rural communities where parents and children simply do not have access to a supermarket. Some 23.5 million Americans - including 6.5 million children - currently live in food deserts. As a parent, do mealtimes feel like a battle between you and your children? I hear many parents talking about how their child is a picky eater, and they have a hard time introducing new foods. And how hard can it be to get them out the door and away from the TV? What would it be like if they actually liked trying new foods and being active?

This week, I was proud to join the First Lady and my colleagues across government for the announcement of her new initiative to combat childhood obesity: Let's Move! As a mother, I am struck by the fact that 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese and understand the desire to see our kids healthy while they are young, and as they grow into adulthood.

A call to action, a challenge for a generation, no matter what we call it, First Lady Michelle Obama's announcement of the Let's Move initiative is an ambitious goal of solving the challenge of childhood obesity. It is a goal that we take seriously here at USDA and we are prepared to dedicate our time, energy, and resources to achieving this goal.

I am so pleased by the response from the education community to the First Lady's call - "Let's Move." Since the launch of this national initiative to fight childhood obesity, education groups are rallying around this national initiative to fight childhood obesity. They recognize that children learn and develop in school so many of the habits that will be with them for a lifetime.
