Daily HealthBeat Tip

Dancing to the good sounds

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Im Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Church ladies and gentlemen believe in doing good. And aerobic dance to Gospel music is a way to do some good for themselves. It gets people up and moving in a way that fits whats familiar to them.

The Healthy Living Program of the Center for Lifetime Wellness in Rochester, New York, focuses on black churches. James Jones is the programs coordinator:

"By working out together with members of their congregation, it gives them the motivation to strive to achieve the goals that they have for themselves." (seven seconds)

The whole congregation is invited to take part. And tying the activity to lessons in Scripture to their beliefs helps to keep them believing they should keep going.

The program is a 2005 winner of a Secretarys Innovation in Prevention award from HHS.
