Daily HealthBeat Tip

Gains we dont want

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

It's easy to pack calories on, and it shows.

Researcher Ramachandran Vasan of Boston University School of Medicine examined data from a long-running look at people in Framingham, Massachusetts. His study in Annals of Internal Medicine found that being at a healthy weight is no guarantee of staying at a healthy weight for even four years.

"Between 12 to 23 percent of our participants who were not overweight at the baseline examination developed new onset overweight over the period of observation." (nine seconds)

The study found nine of 10 men and seven of 10 women were overweight or would become overweight in the next 30 years. The study, supported by the National Institutes of Health, indicates we have to keep our guard up if we want to keep our weight down.
