  1. My heart goes out to the families of the four noble public servants we lost in Libya last night. Chris Stevens, our Ambassador to Libya, dedicated his life to serving the United States abroad. His deep loyalty to our country, commitment to freedom for the Libyan people, and unique talents as a career diplomat cannot be understated. Another victim, Sean Smith, selflessly served the United States ...
for ten years in our foreign service. While two others have not yet been identified, our nation mourns the loss of all of them.

This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the dangers Americans face while serving abroad. I commend all of our diplomatic staff for their invaluable work as they represent American interests around the globe and express my sincere gratitude for their service.

  2. Today, I spoke on the House floor in honor of the victims & families of the September 11 terrorist attacks. As we reflect on this Anniversary of 9/11, we must also remember what makes this country so great: our tolerance, our values – and our freedom. http://bit.ly/TPvWUP
  3. Took part in a September 11th remembrance ceremony on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. It’s been 11 years since blue skies over New York were blackened with soot – 11 years since the Pentagon sustained its only attack in history – and 11 years since the heroism of our countrymen over a quiet field in Pennsylvania. Today, we remember and honor all of the lives lost.

  4. I had the privilege of meeting a great American artist last night – Paul Williams. Paul’s award winning songs have been sung by music greats like R.E.M., David Bowie and Frank Sinatra. It was so great to chat with him & my colleague Rep. John Conyers. We saw a new documentary about Paul’s remarkable life.

  5. I just spoke with NPR about military hazing and how we can protect our servicemembers. After losing my nephew Harry & hearing from so many other victims from around the country, I knew that I had to speak up to help raise awareness. Our military does not have to abuse its own to be strong. http://n.pr/U55CDl
  6. A 22-year-old Sergeant was hazed & violently assaulted with a mallet – and his attackers had the nerve to tape whole thing! He was struck so hard he had a seizure. But the military still acts as if hazing isn’t a problem. We can do more to protect our brave servicemembers from hazing. http://huff.to/UEKFkV

  9. Today, we learned that 103,000 Americans went back to work in the private sector in August. Job growth is always good news, but we still have so far to go. I only wonder how much further along we’d be if Republicans had acted on the Preside...
nt’s American Jobs Act. How ironic that President Obama addressed Congress on his jobs bill 1 year ago tomorrow – a bill that would’ve created 1.9 million new jobs. We can’t allow our economy to be held hostage any longer. http://bit.ly/P2lUg6

  10. Another day & another win for voting rights! A judge just blocked Ohio from arbitrarily cutting off its early voting. 93,000 people voted early in Ohio in 2008 – it’s un-American to try & strip away their rights. We can’t let up now – see www.chu.house.gov/votingrights so no politician can ever take your voting rights away. http://bit.ly/RwG3NF
  11. Yesterday I sat down with Charter California Edition to chat about preserving the Middle Class tax cuts, Medicare, and protecting women’s reproductive rights. The interview will be airing on Headline News over the next month for Time Warner customers in the San Gabriel Valley, but you can watch it here now: http://bit.ly/NZrzq8.
  12. Congratulations to California State University – Los Angeles on being awarded over $500,000 in funding under The Upward Bound Math and Science Program Grant. This program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession. As a Math major myself, I know the importance of this funding to my district and our students!
  13. Great news! A federal court just blocked Texas from enforcing a new harsh voter ID law. We outlawed poll taxes for good reason – they’re discriminatory & rob people of their voting rights. But this law would’ve brought back that ugly tradition by forcing people to spend money to get their new IDs to vote. Nothing is more American than voting – we need to fight voter suppression wherever it exists. http://nyti.ms/PBmfUB
  14. This August started with the triumphant landing of JPL’s Curiosity rover on Mars and ends sadly with the passing of an American hero: Neil Armstrong. His iconic words – “that’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” – and his f...
ootprint forever in the lunar dust became a symbol of what America could accomplish during a time of great challenge. Here’s my blog on how JPL’s Mars Mission has the potential to one day send the next Neil Armstrong to Mars. We’ve come so far with Curiosity. There is no greater testament to Neil Armstrong’s lasting impact. http://1.usa.gov/SQNelu

  15. After torturing Private Danny Chen & driving him to take his own life, Specialist Curtis got just 3 months in jail compared to the three years he could have received. He wasn’t even kicked out of the military. Why should he get to continue his career while his victim is dead? The military hazing that endangers our troops won’t end without stronger consequences. http://bit.ly/Pncjzl

  20. Let’s never forget how hard past generations fought for basic rights for women. Women gained voting rights 92 years ago on Sunday, Women’s Equality Day. It's days like these that make me remember how lucky I am to be a woman serving in Congress. We can never yield in the fight for justice – we must continue to fight for equal pay for equal work, reproductive rights, and a government that fairly represents both men & women.
