pur all Americans to not only be aware of energy conservation, but to take action on conserving energy.

Energy is a fundamental part of our everyday lives. It powers our vehicles, homes, and offices. There are two types of energy — renewable and nonrenewable. Nonrenewable energy sources, including oil, coal, or natural gas are known to produce greenhouse gases. Renewable energy choices like solar or wind power can limit the effects of greenhouse gases and are safer for the environment.

Energy conservation is the practice of reducing our energy consumption. Energy conservation efforts have proved to reduce energy bills and lower greenhouse emissions.

Today’s energy tip is to Drive the speed limit. Did you know that your car runs less efficiently as your speed increases over 50 miles per hour? According to www.fueleconomy.gov, this can translate to an increased fuel cost of 27 to 54 cents per gallon of gasoline.

a 3' x 2' box and mail the package to an abolitionist in Philadelphia.

It was a long 27 hours. He was jostled, thrown and shaken all along the way from wagon, to railroad, to steamboat, to wagon, to railroad, to ferry and back to the wagon.

He didn't lose his sense of manner. When abolitionists pried open the delivery and Brown emerged from the box, his first words were allegedly, “How do you do, gentlemen?”

  11. Second Job is a Home Run

Rob Potts has a great job as Postmaster of Laurel, NJ.

But he's not complaining about his other gig.

    ...
Potts works as a batting practice pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies. When they are home and playing at night, he makes the 20-minute trek down to the stadium and throws pitches to the players so they can work on their swings.

He's been doing the work for four seasons now.

A batting practice pitcher doesn't throw the ball hard, but it does have to be of a consistent speed and placement.

The Phillies have a full-time batting practice pitcher, so Potts only works with the team during home games.

The players know his other job. "Sometimes, they'll ask about area to live in or where something is," he said. "But now it's just business as usual."

mp messages that encourage Americans to take low- and no-cost actions to reduce energy.

The Postal Service reported it had reduced energy use by more than 25 percent since 2003, equal to the average annual energy use of approximately 90,000 U.S. households. In July, the agency also reported a 7.4 percent decrease in its greenhouse gas emissions since 2008. The reduction of nearly 985,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide is equal to removing nearly 200,000 passenger vehicles from the road for a year.

“Leaner, greener, smarter and faster is our mantra,” said Chief Sustainability Officer Thomas G. Day. “More than 850 employee Lean Green teams work every day to implement low- and no-cost ways to conserve energy and reduce costs. In 2011, employees helped the Postal Service save $22 million on more than 1,000 facility energy reduction projects.”

The Postal Service has aggressive sustainability, including:
    • Reduction of facility energy use 30 percent by 2015,
    • Reduction of water usage by 10 percent by 2015,
    • Diversion of 50 percent of solid waste from landfills by 2015, and
    • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2020.

postal Stamps than any other Post Office during the month of October.

The stamp is sold in sheets of twenty 55-cent stamps and by law, 70 percent of the net amount raised is given to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent is given to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. Since 1998, the stamp has raised over $75 million for breast cancer research.

Yesterday, at 3:30 p.m., the pink transformation will begin, thanks to students from Everglades High School who have volunteered to paint the Post Office.

“The Ochopee Post Office may be small, but I am hopeful that customers will purchase enough Breast Cancer Research stamps from this Post Office to make a big difference,” said Watson.

Customers around the globe can purchase stamps from the Ochopee Post Office without a personal visit. Stamps can be purchased by mailing a check payable to Postmaster to: Ochopee Postmaster, 38000 Tamiami Trail E, Ochopee FL 34141-9998. The Breast Cancer Research Semipostal First-Class Stamps cost $11.00 per sheet. Customers should include a return address and their purchase will be mailed to them in an envelope bearing the collectible “Nation’s Smallest Post Office” postmark.
