  2. Today, I introduced legislation to increase the responsiveness of the federal government to the needs of veterans while simultaneously increasing the rate of veteran employment.
  3. My deepest condolences go to the families of those Americans killed in Libya. I am shocked and outraged by the heinous attacks on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Unfortunately, the State Department was irresponsible in posting an ambassador and his staff in an unstable country without requiring a U.S. Marine Corps security detatechment to protect them. It is equally irresponsible for Americans to intentionally attack the Islamic faith for the sole purpose of inflaming tensions while knowingly putting at risk State Department personnel as well as our troops serving us on the ground in Afghanistan.
  4. Eleven years ago today, the world watched in horror as terrorists attacked our country and took the lives of almost 3,000 innocent
victims. Today, our nation pauses to remember the thousands of lives lost on that fateful day, and to give thanks to those brave men and women who risked their own safety to save the lives of thousands more.

We also owe a debt of gratitude to the members of our Armed Forces and our first responders who risk their lives every day to protect us.

One of the greatest lessons we learned on September 11th is that, irrespective of our political views, we are all Americans first.
  5. Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the unemployment rate has dropped from 8.3% to 8.1 percent. However, these job numbers are still disappointing because not only has the unemployment rate exceeded 8% for the 43rd straight month but the 96,000 jobs added in August, less than the 125,000 expected, did not keep pace with population growth. The real unemployment rate, which includ...
es part-time workers who seek full-time jobs, is at 14.7 percent.

In order to hire workers businesses must be able to forecast their costs and, unfortunately, given the uncertainty in tax and regulatory policies this just isn’t possible. Tax rates need to be made permanent, not temporary, and the regulatory burdens that stifle business development must be reduced.

  9. On Jan. 1, 2013, small businesses could be staring down a fiscal cliff of about $600 billion of tax increases and spending cuts, harming our already-fragile economy. Of course, that’s only if Congress fails to reach a compromise.
  10. I am currently accepting applications for the Class of 2017 -- which will begin classes in 2013 -- for the U.S. Air Force Academy, U. S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

  13. Last week, I spent time with children at the Doctors Care Clinic in Littleton, to read to them as part of the Reach Out and Read Program. Reach Out and Read is a nationwide nonprofit program that trains doctors and nurses to give parents the tools, guidance, and encouragement they need to help their children enter school, prepared for success in reading.
