Rep. Moran's Sequestration Survey

We are rapidly moving toward what many are calling a ‘fiscal cliff.’ If current law is not changed by the end of this calendar year, the United States is scheduled to experience a combination of tax increases and spending cuts, called sequestration, which will have sharply negative consequences for the economy.

The Budget Control Act passed last summer in Congress established a Super Committee tasked with finding $1.2 trillion in deficit reductions measures. Failure to do so would trigger sequestration. Sequestration was intended to be an alternative so horrible that a Super Committee would have no other option but to reach a compromise. I voted against the Budget Control Act because I lacked faith that the Super Committee could bridge the current polarization in Congress. Regrettably, I was right.

Sequestration would dramatically cut federal programs, affecting everything: national defense, education, highways, NIH research and development, environmental protection, early childhood development programs, the list goes on and on. As many as two million direct and indirect jobs could be lost, GDP could shrink by 0.7 percent, bringing us to the brink of recession, and our unemployment rate could jump by 1.4 percent.

Fortunately, there is still time to arrive at a compromise to prevent sequestration. As we work in Congress to find a solution to avoid the harmful sequestration cuts, your thoughts and ideas are helpful. Below are several options that have been discussed in Congress.
