Mexico is really many Mexicos. There are many cultures within this country and many nations of indigenous people (the peoples native to the land, or the group of people with the longest known historical ties to a place), whole cultures co-exist individually within this country. It is amazing how many people speak indigenous languages there.

What we are trying to teach is that these cultures are important. We're trying to teach that to Americans and Mexicans too.

I would say that first one should go to Mexico and visit Mexico and not just the beaches, which are very nice, but also travel a little further, deeper, take a car and head south of Oaxaca to see the crafts, the special culture that can be found there, and if one cannot travel there, one can do a little research.

On our website which is www.festival.si.edu, we will have videos of the people who are here at the festival as well as photos taken in Mexico with the explanation of all the groups that came from there. There, visitors can learn a bit of people who are here representing their culture.

This is the palo volantín or flying pole. What they're doing here is very special because they have never done this type of presentation here in the United States, ever.

Benigno Robles Reyes, director of the palo volantín ceremony:
This is the ritual of the flyers, in honor and appreciation of the harvest. In honor of the god of rain. In honor of Mother Earth, wind, sun.

Cristina Diaz-Carrera:
Four flyers go up the flying pole while a musician is playing beats with a drum and the flute and the fllyers descend from the top with a rope, going around the pole until they reach the ground.

The flyers have told me that one has to hear the calling to fly. So if you hear the call then you must go to San Luis Potosí, to the community of Tamaletón, and see if you can fly with the flyers.
