International Offices

Welcome to ATF’s Office of International Affairs, the focal point for the Bureau’s international activities. Our mission is to facilitate and coordinate ATF’s international activities, including requests from foreign nations for ATF assistance and training as well as facilitating criminal investigations such as firearms trafficking or illicit tobacco diversion. Through our international offices, we provide the international liaison to ATF’s mission to interdict and prevent illegal firearms trafficking and combat violent criminal gangs.

The International Affairs team of special agents and professionals provide expert technical and policy guidance to foreign nations on firearms and explosives issues. We partner with foreign law enforcement to meet the challenges of fighting global criminal activities. We conduct assessments of a nation’s vulnerabilities to international firearms trafficking and promote and implement United States strategies, such as the International Trafficking in Arms Program or Project Gunrunner, to combat violent crime. ATF’s International Affairs Office also serves as the United States’ point of contact for efforts by international organizations such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States to combat illicit firearms trafficking.

ATF’s Office of International Affairs has personnel serving in Canada, Mexico, Colombia, and Iraq, as well as a Regional Firearms Advisor based in San Salvador and serving El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize, Honduras and Costa Rica.
