Alliance for Lupus Research

The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is a national voluntary health organization founded in 1999 and based in New York City. Chaired by Robert Wood Johnson IV, a member of the Johnson & Johnson family, it has become the world's largest private source of lupus research funds and has committed upwards of $60 million to lupus-specific research projects since its inception. The organization's mission is to find better treatments and ultimately prevent and cure lupus by supporting medical research.

In 2005 the ALR formed and supported the International Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Genetics (SLEGEN) Consortium, charging scientists with searching for genetic variants that might predispose an individual to developing lupus.

Initial study results uncovered several genes linked to lupus. Published in the journal Nature Genetics in January 2008, the findings will lead to new cures and earlier diagnosis.

Program objectives:
  1. Prevent, treat and cure lupus through medical research.
  2. Apply a business approach to the research process, funding scientifically sound but also “high risk, high reward” projects.
  3. Invest in the best ideas and develop new treatments for lupus.

The ALR's board of directors pays for all administrative and fundraising costs; 100% of all donations go to support lupus research.
The ALR website offers fundraising and volunteer opportunities, including the Walk with Us to Cure Lupus program (www.walk.lupusresearch.org).
