Join Us in Celebrating Older Americans Month in May

Never too old to play - Older Americans Month 2012

May is Older Americans Month (OAM), a national observance that exemplifies our nation’s commitment to recognize and celebrate the contributions of older Americans. The theme for Older Americans Month in 2012 is Never Too Old to Play. This theme encourages older Americans to stay active in their own lives and in their communities through a variety of activities.

Current trends show that people over age 60 account for an ever-growing percentage of participants in community service positions, faith-based organizations and arts and recreational groups. OAM is an opportunity to show appreciation for the role that older Americans play in different communities across the U.S.

In the spirit of play, the OAM website encourages people to host a “Day of Play” in their communities, offering an activity toolkit with resources for possible Day of Play activities, including trivia contests, Wii bowling tournaments and scavenger hunts. You’ll also find several interactive features to help you organize and share your OAM activities. In the Community Corner of the site, you can schedule an event through an online calendar. You can also share stories on your Day of Play with photos, videos and/or testimonials in the Community Corner. In the Download Center, there are a variety of materials to help you promote OAM, including the OAM logo and poster, banner ads and a social media story arc (examples of tweets and Facebook postings on OAM).

Join us! OAM is a perfect opportunity to acknowledge and thank older Americans for the work that they do in communities throughout the U.S.
