August 2012 Constituent Survey
1. Should Federal agencies be required to conduct economic impact or cost benefit studies before writing and issuing major new regulations?
Yes. It’s important to understand how major policy changes impact the economy before they are implemented
No. Such studies are a waste of resources and are responsible for slowing down the implementation of important public policies.
Unsure
2. The House recently passed legislation (H.R. 5652, The Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012) which makes cost saving reforms to all government agencies in order to prevent a looming $500 billion mandatory cut in the Defense Department’s budget beginning in January. Should the Senate act to prevent a massive cut to the Defense Department or allow the cuts to proceed?
Yes. This cut will lead to massive lay-offs in the defense and aerospace industries, put our troops serving overseas in jeopardy and risk our national security.
No. The Senate should allow the cuts to proceed. The Defense budget is too big and there are other more important priorities to fund.
Unsure
3. Job creators and every American who pays income taxes are facing the prospect of higher taxes starting January 1, 2013, due to the scheduled expiration of the low-tax policies originally enacted in 2001 and 2003, and extended with bipartisan support in 2010. Among the scheduled tax increases are: Income tax increases for all married couples filing jointly, increasing the capital gains tax from 15% to 20%, the 10% tax bracket for low income individuals will rise to 15%, an increase in all other income tax rates including increases for small businesses, the death tax will increase to 55% and a host of other deductions will be phased out. Should Congress allow these tax increases to go into effect?
Yes, the federal government needs more revenue and all taxpayers should be asked to sacrifice more.
No, these tax increases will negatively impact the economy and job creation.
