Program Description

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) provides services and benefits to needy families. TANF was designed to give states flexibility to operate programs that serve one of the following purposes:
  • Provide assistance to needy families so children may be cared for in their homes or homes of relatives
  • End dependence of needy parents on government benefits by promoting job preparation, work and marriage
  • Prevent and reduce the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies and establish annual numerical goals for preventing and reducing the incidence of these pregnancies
  • Encourage the formation and maintenance of two parent families
  • In Connecticut, TANF funds the Temporary Family Assistance program, Safety Net, Employment Services and many other programs and services for needy families.

General Program Requirements

In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of Connecticut, either pregnant or responsible for a child under 19 years of age, a U.S. national, citizen, legal alien, or permanent resident, have low or very low income, and be either under-employed (working for very low wages), unemployed or about to become unemployed.
