Current Opportunities | Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) | Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) | Student Volunteer Program

ICE hosts a variety of student employment programs for students interested in a rewarding career in law enforcement and public service. The agency provides both paid and unpaid job opportunities to students who are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, and are taking at least a half-time course load at an accredited high school, technical, vocational, two-or four-year college or university, graduate or professional school.

ICE student employment programs offer an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a professional law enforcement setting, and some programs offer a potential path to a career with the agency.

Students should visit http://www.usajobs.gov/StudentJobs for more information. Regulations governing specific guidance on student employment programs can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, [CFR 213.3202].

Student Employment Programs

Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)

The Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) provides work experience directly related to a student’s academic program or career goals. This program requires a commitment and signed agreement by all the parties involved.

ICE will mentor and guide students through the program and make a good faith effort for conversion into a permanent position upon completion of academic requirements for graduation and 640 work hours.

Students will receive pay based on education and experience, as well as federal benefits including holiday pay, annual leave and sick leave.

Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)

The Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) offers the student maximum flexibility, because the nature of the work does not have to be related to academic or career goals, but still allows for the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a professional setting.

STEP appointments are for up to one year, with the opportunity for extension as long as the student continues taking at least a half-time course load.

Appointments to the STEP program may be made anytime during the year, including summer, and both part-time and full-time appointments are available.

STEP does not provide a path to a permanent position. However, students are paid based on education and experience and earn annual and sick leave.

Student Volunteer Program

The Student Volunteer Program (SVP) offers unpaid training opportunities. These opportunities provide work experience related to a student’s academic program and as well as an opportunity to explore career options while developing personal and professional skills. SVP service will vary by program and office, but can enrich a student’s future by:

  • Allowing career exploration early in a students academic course;
  • Providing exposure to new and emerging occupations;
  • Giving academic credit for work performed (if approved by educational institution); and
  • Providing experience that will enhance a student’s ability to obtain paying jobs in the future.

SVP participants are not federal employees, and volunteer service is not creditable for leave accrual or any other employee benefit.
