North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue

On September 10, 2012 Congressman Sires spoke at the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department in West New York. He congratulated the Department for receiving the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant, which will allow NHRFR to hire 32 full time fire fighters.

(Washington, D.C.)- Congressman Sires supported passage of H.R. 5856, the Defense Department Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2013, which passed the House of Representatives by 326 to 90. The bill would provide $519 billion for the Department of Defense budget in FY 2013, as well as funding for overseas military operations.

Congress is currently working to reauthorize legislation known as the “Farm Bill.” This legislation covers a wide range of policy issues, including nutrition assistance programs. Due to the current budget constraints, some in Congress have proposed dramatically cutting nutrition assistance like the food stamp program to reduce government spending. In your opinion, how should Congress address food stamps in the upcoming Farm Bill?

Maintain current funding levels for the food stamp program.
Decrease food stamp funding by reducing fraud and abuse in the program.
Cut food stamp funding by reducing benefits under the program.
Increase funding for food stamps.
