Des Moines, IA – Congressman Leonard Boswell (IA-3) today reminded students the deadline is fast approaching for nomination applications to the United States Service Academies from the Third Congressional District for the entering class of summer 2013.

The deadline for nomination applications is September 30th.

“Every year I look forward to recommending students in my district who wish to serve in and help lead our nation’s armed forces,” said Boswell, a 20-year veteran of the Army. “The service academies offer outstanding young men and women great educational opportunities.”

Academy applicants are judged on the basis of scholarship, leadership, character, physical aptitude, medical fitness, and motivation. The Congressman nominates up to 10 candidates from the Third Congressional District for each available vacancy. The four service academies that require congressional nominations are the United States Air Force, Military, Naval, and Merchant Marine Academies.

Interested students must contact the academies of their choice to begin the process and contact Congressman Boswell’s office in Des Moines to obtain an application packet.
