Announcements: Dr. Collins made brief announcements on the Administration's recent announcement of a new $156 million funding commitment to Alzheimer's Research over the next two years, and a White House event on science, technology, and innovation for global development that he attended. He also indicated that future meetings will focus on important topics for FY2012. He additionally invited Dr. Hodes to provide a brief update on the creation of a new Interest Group on the biology of aging.

Common Fund Strategic Planning: Jim Anderson

Dr. Anderson provided an overview of the Common Fund's current status, including the criteria and profile of Common Fund programs, as well as the types of science that are addressed. He described the strategic planning process for defining new initiatives and indicated that strategic planning is underway for FY13 and just starting for FY14 Common Fund programs. The FY14 planning process will consist of both internal and external input.

GTR Demo: Kathy Hudson and Jim Ostell

Dr. Hudson provided an overview of the steps leading to the development of the Genetic Testing Registry (GTR). The Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health, and Society recommended in 2008 that HHS establish a genetic test registry and NIH responded by developing a voluntary registry, GeneReviews, to which GTR will link. The development of GTR has benefited from extensive stakeholder input and will be launched soon.

Dr. Ostell provided a live demonstration of the GTR. In addition to providing information about single-gene tests, multiplex panels, and arrays, GTR includes links to a wide range of supporting information about the disease. For example, PubMed articles, relevant trials on ClinicalTrials.gov, SNOMED CT terms, and practice guidelines endorsed by professional associations are all cited when available.
