Announcements: Dr. Collins made brief announcements on the creation of a new NIH Director’s Award in clinical care, a new BMJ journal article on the publication of NIH funded trials, and possible new focus topics for 2012.
Clinical Practice Guidelines: Francis Collins, Lawrence Tabak, and Susan Shurin
Dr. Collins provided an overview of the 2011 IOM Report on clinical practice guidelines and the eight standards that were recommended in the report. Dr. Tabak then provided an overview of current IC activities in the development of clinical practice guidelines. Several ICs are currently involved in a variety of activities that support the development of clinical practice guidelines, ranging from participation in Federal Working Groups, to sponsoring conferences or meetings.
Dr. Shurin provided a brief history of NHLBI's involvement in the development of clinical practice guidelines in the areas of high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol in adults, and overweight/obesity in adults. She also provided a brief overview of AHRQ's role and the role of professional societies in the development of guidelines.
Budget Updates: Francis Collins
Dr. Collins provided a brief update on the funding strategies for FY12.
