This site is useful if you’re interested in understanding and strengthening humanities and culture in the U.S. In 1998, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences realized that reliable, comprehensive, and consistently updated statistical data were needed to understand relevant trends. These indicators, modeled after those of the National Science Board, demonstrate the importance and feasibility of compiling statistical data on the condition of the humanities analogous to those in the sciences. The indicators provide researchers and policymakers, museums, libraries, humanities councils, and other public institutions with good statistical tools to answer basic questions about primary and secondary humanities education, undergraduate and graduate education in the humanities, the humanities workforce, levels and sources of program funding, public understanding and impact of the humanities, and similar areas of concern. The Humanities Indicators present quantitative measures and do not attempt qualitative assessment.
