Health IT Safety Net Employers

Why Do Safety Net Providers Need a Health IT Workforce?
Health IT workforce professionals will be needed to implement Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems at these new delivery sites, to provide network solutions for health systems, and to develop templates for EHR system customization. Electronic exchange of data will allow for coordination of care among providers with less duplication.  Health IT will also foster greater safety, with fewer medical errors, quality measurements of care and new abilities to monitor public health. Additional need for health IT professionals will result from the upcoming International Classification of Diseases conversion (ICD-10), and to implement IT systems necessary to coordinate care in accordance with various Federal initiatives (e.g. Patient Centered Medical Home).

Safety net providers that will need a skilled health IT workforce include the following:

  • Federally Qualified Health Centers
  • Rural Health Clinics
  • Free Clinics
  • Homeless Shelters
  • Critical Access Hospitals
  • Indian Health Service Facility
  • Mobile Health Clinics
  • School-based health centers
  • Nurse-managed health clinics
  • Ryan White Clinics
