HHS awards $19.3 million to boost primary care workforce

Funds support primary care physician and physician assistant training

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced $19.3 million in funding to support programs to educate and train the primary care physician and physician assistant workforce.

The FY 2011 Primary Care Training and Enhancement grants, funded by HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration, include the following programs:

Residency Training in Primary Care ($5.9 million) Funds innovative curriculum development in residency programs in family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, and combinations of these disciplines
Physician Assistant Training in Primary Care ($2.3 million) Supports programs that train physician assistants and physician assistant program faculty.
Physician Faculty Development in Primary Care ($4.4 million) Funds programs that train physicians to teach in family medicine, general internal medicine, and general pediatrics programs and to teach in community-based settings.
Pre-doctoral Training in Primary Care ($3.8 million) Funds programs to train medical students for careers in family medicine, general internal medicine, and general pediatrics.
Academic Administrative Units in Primary Care ($2.9 million) Supports the establishment, maintenance and improvement of academic administrative units (e.g., primary care academic departments) that provide clinical instruction in family medicine, general internal medicine, and general pediatrics.

“Investing in our nation’s primary care workforce is essential to ensuring that we can meet the health care needs of the growing and aging population. The awards announced today are an important part of the Administration’s commitment to building the health care workforce for the 21st Century,” said Secretary Sebelius.

“We must continue working to ensure that all Americans have access to the essential health care they need to live longer and more productive lives,” said HRSA Administrator Mary K. Wakefield, Ph.D., R.N.
