MSP Region Ranks 10th in Exports Print E-mail

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) announced new export data that shows the Minneapolis/St. Paul/Bloomington metropolitan area’s merchandise exports increased by $3 billion – 12.9 percent between 2010 and 2011 – growing from $23.2 billion to $26.2 billion. This impressive growth has put the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) into a select group of 11 nationwide MSAs which exported at least $25 billion in merchandise exports last year.

"Exports are an increasingly important part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul economy as local businesses both big and small continue to look beyond our borders to increase their customer base," said Francisco Sánchez, Commerce Under Secretary for International Trade. "I have seen firsthand the power of exports for the region and the diversity of products and services that are in demand all over the world. The new data confirms the region's focus on increasing exports is already bearing fruit."

New China Foreign Food Exporter Filing Requirement Print E-mail

China's Inpsection and Quarantine Bureau (AQSIQ) recently issued "Decree 55". It requires all companies and agents exporting food to mainland China, and all consignees importing food to mainland China, to register online with AQSIQ by October 1, 2012. Although AQSIQ will continue to accept applications for registration after the effective date, only shipments from registered companies and agents will be allowed into the country after September, so exporters are encouraged to file as soon as possible.

Decree 55 requires the following information:

• Exporter name

• Agent name

• Addresses

• Contact names

• Phone numbers

• Food category or categories

Upon submission, the applicant will obtain a serial number generated by the filing management system, which can be used to check the filing process and modify information. AQSIQ will keep a list of registered exporters on their website of exporters.  Need assistance with exporting agricultural commodities?  Contact the MN Department of Agriculture's International Marketing division.

Dutch VAT Increase Print E-mail

On October 1, 2012, the Dutch VAT rate will increase from 19% to 21%.  As an incentive for foreign companies to situate their European distribution activities in the Netherlands, the Dutch government set up an attractive taxation feature called 'VAT deferment'. Under this system, VAT does not have to be paid at the moment of importation, instead it can be postponed to the periodical VAT return.  Read more here
