PREFACE

This report presents results from the 1997 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Three other volumes present data from the 1997 study: ( 1) Preliminary Results from the 1997 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (DHHS Publication No. SMA 98-3251); (2) National Household Survey on Drug Abuse: Population Estimates 1997 (DHHS Publication No. SMA 98-3250); and (3) 1997 NHSDA Public Use File and Codebook (available from OAS/SAMHSA), which contains a SAS dataset on magnetic tape or CD-ROM. The public use files from 1979 to 1996 are currently available on the World Wide Web (WWW) within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA) at the University of Michigan: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/SAMHDA/nsduh.html; the 1997 file soon will be available from this source.

The Main Findings report contains a more comprehensive description of the NHSDA methodology and reporting of the survey results than either the Preliminary Results or the Population Estimates Reports, which are intended to provide early release of a smaller subset of the survey results.
