Loot was taken in 6,225 (91 percent) of the 6,849 incidents. Loot taken is itemized as follows:

Full or partial recovery of loot taken was reported by law enforcement agencies in 1,189 (19 percent) of the 6,225 incidents in which loot was taken. Loot recovered is itemized as follows:

Number, Race, and Sex of Perpetrators

The number of persons known to be involved in the 6,849 robberies, burglaries, and larcenies was 8,393. The following table shows a breakdown of the 8,393 persons who have been identified by race and sex. In a small number of cases, the use of full disguise makes determination of race and sex impossible.

Unknown Race/Sex: 113

Investigation to date has resulted in the identification of 3,342 (40 percent) of the 8,393 persons known to be involved. Of these 3,342 identified persons, 1,444 (43 percent) were determined to be users of narcotics, and 633 (19 percent) were found to have been previously convicted in either federal or state court for bank robbery, bank burglary, or bank larceny.

Injuries, Deaths, and Hostages Taken

Acts of violence were committed during 293 (4 percent) of the 6,849 robberies, burglaries, and larcenies which occurred during this 12-month period. These acts included 78 instances involving the discharge of firearms, 171 instances involving assaults, and 52 instances of hostage situations. (One or more acts of violence may occur during an incident.) These acts of violence resulted in 123 injuries, 21 deaths, and 105 persons being taken hostage.

Acts of violence were committed during one of the eight extortion incidents which occurred during this 12-month period. These acts included one explosion, with no injuries or persons taken hostage.
