  • Free MEDLINE--Press Announcement (6/26/97)
  • New 1-888-FINDNLM Toll-Free Number (6/18/97)
    • The first phase of NLM's customer service system initiative has been completed: a new toll-free number and simplified phone tree became available on May 15. NLM is now providing customers with one number to call, 1-888-FINDNLM (1-888-346-3656). International callers may dial 301-594-5983 to reach us. The phone tree has been streamlined to 4 menu choices. Calls are being answered by a variety of NLM librarians and technical information specialists from MEDLARS Management and the Reference Section. The old 800 numbers will be phased out over the next months and are already mapped to the new simplified automatic call distribution system.

April 1997

  • Data Entry Backlog Eliminated (4/10/97)
    • The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has eliminated both the MEDLINE data entry backlog and the concomitant indexing backlog. Both of these backlogs resulted from the suspension of NLM's editing and data entry contract from late February 1996 to late April 1996 by the General Services Administration Board of Contract Appeals, the Board which ruled on the protest against that contract award. The MEDLINE database mounted on MEDLARS at NLM is now current.

March 1997

  • Statement of the Director, National Library of Medicine on NLM's FY 1998 Budget (DOS text format from Department of Health and Human Services) (3/6/97)
