Official Misconduct

Misconduct on the part of U.S. Postal Service employees includes misuse of Postal Service computers, destruction or theft of Postal Service property, falsification of official documents and forgery, theft of funds, abuse of authority, sabotage of operations, narcotics usage or sale of drugs while on duty, and alcohol abuse.

During fiscal year 2011, the OIG special agents completed 915 Official Misconduct investigations, resulting in 38 arrests, 88 indictments/informations, 78 convictions, 605 administrative actions, and recovered over $5,500,000 for the Postal Service.

A major investigation in Puerto Rico, led by the OIG and the Drug Enforcement Agency, yielded 20 indictments and a recovery of firearms and drugs. Seven postal employees were among those indicted on drug, conspiracy, theft of mail, and firearm charges.
