Biosketch

Dr. Brent B. Stanfield is the Director of NIDDK's Division of Extramural Activities.  Dr. Stanfield earned his Ph.D. in neurobiology from Washington University, St. Louis where he developed a focus on developmental neuroscience, especially development of the cerebral cortex.  After completing postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences, and faculty appointments at the Salk Institute of Biological Sciences and the School of Medicine, University of California, San Diego, Dr. Stanfield moved his lab to the intramural program of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).  He subsequently held other positions within NIMH such as Director of the Office of Science Policy and Acting Deputy Scientific Director.  Prior to accepting his current position at NIDDK in 2005, Dr. Stanfield served as the Deputy Director and Acting Director at the Center for Scientific Review.

Dr. Stanfield is a member of multiple NIH Standing Committees and is deeply committed to improving extramural program operations across NIH.  He represents NIDDK on the Extramural Program Management Committee (EPMC).  He also currently serves on the OPASI Steering Committee Working Group, the NIH Compensation Committee (NCC), the Steering Committee Working Group on Peer Review the, and numerous other standing and ad hoc trans-NIH committees.  His scientific service has included membership on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Comparative Neurology and service as an Associate Editor of The Journal of Neuroscience.
