Current Position:

Director, Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, & Metabolic Diseases



Current Portfolio/Responsibilities:
- Responsible for selection and supervision of DDEM staff and for oversight of $640 million in Federal funding of research in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism.

- Responsible for planning and implementation of multiple major clinical trials initiated by NIDDK and other components of NIH, with significant co-sponsorship from NIDDK.

- Responsible for several aspects of trans-NIH coordination of diabetes research, as chair of the Diabetes Mellitus Interagency Coordinating Committee (DMICC)..

- Responsible for coordinating the trans-DHHS planning and implementation of a special appropriation for type 1 diabetes research, currently $150 million annually.

- Jointly with CDC, responsible for the development and implementation of activities of the National Diabetes Education Program.

- Represent NIDDK in interactions with professional societies and voluntary groups and in a wide variety of forums and working groups.
