Last week, I started a conversation about a tough topic—bowel control. It can be embarrassing to talk about, but being able to talk about the problem is the first step in treatment.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

You may be embarrassed to talk to your doctor about bowel control problems, but your doctor will not be shocked or surprised. Treatments for bowel control problems are available, and are effective. They include:

  • changes to eating, diet, and nutrition
  • medications
  • pelvic floor exercises
  • bowel training
  • and surgery

Talk with your doctor to learn which of these treatment options are best for you.

For more information, visit the NIDDK Let’s Talk about Bowel Control Awareness Campaign at bowelcontrol.nih.gov. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more Healthy Moments.
