If you have kidney failure and are preparing for a transplant, there’s good reason to have hope for a bright future.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

I’ve been telling you about Sean Elliott, a retired NBA champion from the San Antonio Spurs, who is now a broadcast commentator for the team. During his career, Sean was diagnosed with kidney disease, but it didn’t keep him out of the game for long.

For those of you who are planning to get a transplant, Sean shares this message:

“I came back and I played a season and a half of NBA basketball after I had a kidney transplant. If I can do that, then people can get up and they can go to work every day . . . they can have a great quality of life after a transplant. As a matter of fact, it’s like flipping on a light switch – you won’t believe what it will do for you.”
