With the economy as tough as it is, you may ask yourself “can I afford to eat healthy?”
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
The fact is, you CAN eat healthy without blowing your budget. Here are some tips for good nutrition in a bad economy.
- Buy fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season—they usually cost less.
- Store fruits separately from vegetables, because as some fruits ripen, they can give off a gas that makes vegetables wilt faster.
- Choose canned tuna in water or salmon as a less expensive alternative to fresh meats—they have just as much protein.
- Make a healthy shopping list before you go to the store so you don’t buy on impulse.
