The key to a happy, healthy vacation, if you have diabetes, is good planning.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Whether you’re traveling by car, train or plane, follow these tips for good health:

  • Bring extra diabetes medications and supplies – just in case.
  • If you are taking a long car or plane trip, try to get up and move around every hour or two.
  • Check your blood glucose often. Changes in diet, activity, and time zones can affect your blood glucose in unexpected ways.
  • When eating out, follow your meal plan as much as possible, and always take an extra snack with you in case you can’t eat on your usual schedule.
  • Protect your feet by wearing comfortable shoes that fit right. And, don’t go barefoot anywhere.
